Context and stakeholder analysis

Context and stakeholder analysis is a tool required for ISO certification. It helps us identify strategies for long-term sustainable success. It enables companies to navigate their current environment and turn their value chains into a driver of positive impact and sustainable growth. In the context and stakeholder analysis, we assess the environment in which we operate, in accordance with our integrated management policy.

The equivalent in the case of Social Responsibility is the ‘materiality analysis’.

Context analysis

The context analysis identifies internal and external factors that may affect the management system, as well as the needs and expectations of stakeholders, with the aim of ensuring the system’s effectiveness, its continuous improvement and the achievement of its objectives.

The most common external factors are: legislative or regulatory changes; economic and market conditions; technological trends; social and environmental expectations; competition and benchmarking; impacts of climate change; and contractual requirements of customers.

Some of the internal factors to be taken into account are: Organisational culture and values; Internal structure and functions; Staff resources and skills; Available infrastructure and technology; Work processes and methodologies; Results of audits and reviews; Strategic objectives and internal policies.

Stakeholders

The most common needs and expectations of interested parties, as required for context analysis under ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 27001, IQNet SR10 and other standards, are as follows:

The internal interested parties to be considered are:

  • Customers: Product or service quality and reliability, compliance with deadlines, competitive pricing and after-sales service.
  • Workers: Occupational health and safety, stability, training, a positive working environment and good working conditions.
  • Suppliers: Timely payments, long-term relationships and clear communication of requirements and changes.
  • Subcontractors: Clear contractual conditions, collaboration, technical support and a safe working environment.
  • Management / Ownership: Profitability, sustainable growth, legal compliance, reputation and process efficiency.
  • Certification body: Compliance with standard requirements, access to information and demonstrable continual improvement.
  • Internal / external auditors: Access to documentation, collaboration, clear responses and traceability.

The external interested parties to be considered are:

  • Public administration: Legal and regulatory compliance, timely submissions and good environmental and labour practices.
  • Local community: Minimal environmental and noise impact, local employment opportunities and social responsibility.
  • Competitors: Innovation, sector best practices and differentiation.
  • Financial institutions: Economic solvency, fulfilment of obligations and clear information.
  • Insurance companies: Appropriate risk management and safe processes and infrastructure.
  • NGOs / environmental groups: Respect for the environment, transparency and participation in sustainable initiatives.

Key points for analysing the context and stakeholders in ISO 9001 quality management

The analysis of the context and stakeholders in ISO 9001 identifies internal and external factors that influence quality, as well as legal and operational requirements. It enables an understanding of risks and opportunities and provides insight into key needs and expectations: fault-free products, meeting deadlines, effective support, clear communication, continuous improvement and reliable suppliers. This ensures a robust, customer-focused quality management system.

In the ISO 14001 certification process, the analysis of the context and stakeholders under ISO 14001 identifies internal and external environmental factors, legal requirements, and environmental risks or opportunities. It enables an understanding of key needs and expectations, such as reducing environmental impacts, regulatory compliance, waste management, energy efficiency, pollution prevention and environmental transparency. This analysis ensures a robust environmental management system that is focused on sustainability.

The context and stakeholder analysis in ISO 45001 identifies internal and external factors that influence occupational health and safety, critical risks, legal requirements and operational conditions. The analysis in the ISO 45001 certificate helps to identify key needs and expectations, which include: safe working environments, accident prevention, adequate training, protective equipment, effective communication and regulatory compliance. This analysis strengthens an effective and proactive OSH management system.

The context and stakeholder analysis in ISO 50001 identifies internal and external factors that affect energy performance, legal requirements, and risks or opportunities for efficiency. The analysis of the ISO 50001 certificate helps to identify key needs and expectations: reducing consumption, controlling energy costs, regulatory compliance, responsible use of resources, technological improvement and transparency in energy performance. This reinforces an effective and sustainable energy management system.

The analysis of the context and stakeholders in ISO 14006 identifies internal and external factors that affect eco-design, as well as legal and environmental requirements. It enables the identification of risks, opportunities and life-cycle impacts, as well as key needs and expectations: more sustainable products, less waste, transparent information, greater durability and improvements in environmental efficiency.
