What is the ISO 50001 standard?

ISO 50001 is the ISO standard for energy management. It sets out the requirements for an Energy Management System (EMS), enabling organisations to continuously improve their energy performance, optimise energy use, and reduce costs, greenhouse gas emissions and their carbon footprint.

Any organisation, regardless of its size, sector or geographical location, that wishes to improve its energy management and demonstrate its commitment to sustainability can be certified.

No, ISO 50001 energy management certification is voluntary. However, it may be required in tenders, as a condition set by clients, or in order to obtain public funding.

The ISO 50001 energy management system focuses specifically on energy management, whilst ISO 14001 addresses environmental management in a broader sense. Both standards are compatible and can be easily integrated.

ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 are compatible and complementary; they integrate management systems using the PDCA approach, enabling the optimisation of energy and environmental efficiency, reducing impacts and costs, and improving corporate sustainability.

The main requirements of the ISO 50001 standard are:

  • Management commitment, for example through the Energy Policy. Energy analysis and baseline. A detailed assessment of energy consumption, establishing an initial baseline to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Establishment of energy performance indicators. Energy indicators must be monitored regularly.
  • Identification of opportunities for improvement.
  • Establishment of energy objectives and action plans. These must be quantified, assign a responsible person and specify the necessary resources.
  • Monitoring, measurement and tracking of energy performance. This requires operational control procedures.
  • Review and continuous improvement of the system. This involves maintaining monitoring records, conducting internal ISO 50001 energy audits and management review.
 
The time taken to achieve ISO 50001 certification depends on the size, complexity and level of energy management within the organisation, but it usually takes between 5 and 9 months.
The ISO 50001 certificate is valid for three years, with annual internal and certification body surveillance audits, and a renewal audit by the certification body at the end of the cycle.
