Continuous improvement using PDCA
The PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act), also known as the Deming cycle, is a tool for continual improvement in management systems. It consists of four key phases that are repeated cyclically to support the analysis and optimization of processes, services or products.
- Plan: Problems are identified, data is collected and clear objectives and actions are established to improve a process or achieve a specific goal. This phase defines what is to be achieved and how results will be obtained in accordance with the policy and requirements of the management system.
- Do: Processes are implemented in a documented manner, making it possible to test their effectiveness and efficiency.
- Check: The performance of processes and products is monitored and measured against the system objectives, and the results are documented through process indicators. This makes it possible to detect deviations, errors or areas for improvement.
- Act: Results are reviewed and the cycle starts again, establishing changes to the policy, context analysis, risks and opportunities, as well as new objectives and actions to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the system.
The Deming cycle or PDCA cycle enables organizations to adapt, innovate and improve continuously, ensuring more efficient management focused on excellence.
PDCA and ISO standards
ISO standards are based on this approach to ensure the consistency, effectiveness and continual improvement of management systems. The effective application of the PDCA cycle helps organizations control risks, identify opportunities and increase the satisfaction of interested parties.
The PDCA cycle (Plan-Do-Check-Act) is a key tool in quality management and continual improvement, forming the methodological basis of many ISO standards, such as:
- ISO 9001 for quality management.
- EMAS and ISO 14001 for environmental management, ISO 50001 for energy efficiency and the GHG Protocol for GHG reporting.
- ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety management.
- ISO 27001 and ENS for information security.
- Social responsibility standards and assessments, such as EcoVadis and SMETA.
This cyclical approach makes it possible to establish systematic processes to achieve objectives, monitor their performance and improve them on an ongoing basis.
