The Organic Farming Certificate is a guarantee of quality and environmental commitment. It involves the use of farming techniques designed to preserve the environment, maintain or enhance soil fertility, and provide food that retains all its natural properties. More specifically:
- Product quality assurance. This means that the farm or processing facility where the product was produced or processed is subject to the relevant checks and inspections by the designated authority.

Requirements for the Organic Farming Certificate
Farms wishing to obtain the Organic Farming Certificate must follow the steps below:
- Transition to organic farming. Farms starting to engage in organic production must complete a conversion period. During the transition period, the provisions relating to organic farming will apply. This will enable them to obtain the Organic Farming Certificate.
- Compliance with certification requirements. Organic crop production must comply with certain standards regarding soil treatment and damage prevention. Furthermore, seeds must be produced organically and cleaning products must have been authorised by the Commission.
- Organic Farming Label. This is mainly carried out by public control authorities, through regional Organic Farming Councils or Committees which are bodies under the relevant Regional Ministries or Departments of Agriculture, or directly by Directorates-General attached to them.
- Organic Product Label. This allows organic agricultural products to be distinguished in the market.
Products from third countries may be marketed as organic products if they comply with the Regulation and have been subject to inspection.
