An Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) is a trusted operator certified by Spanish Customs (AEAT) acting as an AEO certifying body for customs operations governed by regulations, and as such, can benefit from advantages in their non-EU trade transactions.
Any individual or legal entity established in Spain, regardless of the size of their business and provided they are involved in the international logistics chain, may apply to Customs to become an Authorised Economic Operator (AEO): Manufacturers, Exporters, Customs Agents, Freight Forwarders, Warehousekeepers, Importers and Carriers.
When Customs, as the AEO certifying authority, grants Authorised Economic Operator status, you will be regarded as a secure and reliable operator by the rest of the logistics chain across the European Union.

How do you obtain Authorised Economic Operator status?
To obtain AEO status, the company must assess its compliance, strengthen its security, accounting and logistics controls, and document its management systems. It then submits an application to the AEAT along with the required documentation. The agency will carry out audits and inspections. If the criteria are met, it will grant the AEO certificate, which must be maintained through ongoing checks.
