ISO 14020 requirements
Applying for an eco-label for a specific product involves certification of compliance with certain environmental requirements that demonstrate that the product significantly improves environmental performance throughout its entire life cycle.
ISO 14020 sets out the principles for the development and use of eco-labels and environmental claims. It is intended that other applicable standards in the ISO 14020 series may be used in conjunction with this International Standard.
ISO standards provide the most widely used framework for the voluntary eco-labelling of products and services. The standards governing this type of labelling belong to the ‘ISO 14020 – Eco-labels and environmental claims’ family. The ISO labelling standards distinguish between three types of labels:
- Environmental self-declarations – Type II environmental labelling, in accordance with ISO 14021.
- ISO 14024 – Type I environmental labelling
- ISO 14025 – Type III environmental product declarations
