What should an occupational health and safety audit take into account?
An audit is a tool that enables the preparation of a SWOT analysis of working conditions (strengths and weaknesses). As such, its results serve as a guide for the occupational health and safety programme, helping to improve its effectiveness. In the OSHAS audit, the following must be taken into account:
- Planning of the OSHAS 18001 audit, ensuring that all processes and requirements of the standard are audited at least once a year. The frequency of the OSHAS audit may be increased for key processes or for processes where incidents have previously been detected.
- Selection of the audit team. The company must define in its audit procedure the profile and training required to carry out the OSHAS 18001 audit. It must allow the audit to be carried out by an external audit team.
- Documentation of the OSHAS audit, in accordance with the audit procedure. It is advisable to use a checklist and templates for drafting the audit report.
