Objectives of the food handler training course
Participants on the food handler course will acquire the skills needed to ensure food remains in perfect condition in terms of quality and safety, and to safeguard their own health and that of consumers. More specifically, upon completion of the food handler course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the importance of proper food hygiene when handling food for consumption, as well as the terms most frequently used in the field of food hygiene and food handling.
- Understand the sources of food contamination, the types of bacteria they can produce, and how to prevent cross-contamination between two or more foods.
- Promote good food handling practices, hygiene in the premises and with work utensils, as well as ensuring proper cleanliness and personal hygiene for all those who come into contact with food.
- To identify the measures that need to be taken in food handling to clean and disinfect the premises.
- To learn the main methods of food handling and preservation to prevent the onset of infectious diseases or food-borne allergies that could result from contaminated food or food in poor condition.
Food handling course methodology
- The food handler training course can be delivered either in-house or online.
- A certificate will be issued upon completion of the course. This fulfils the requirements of Royal Decree 109/2010 on the responsibility for training food business operators, who must demonstrate, during official inspections, that the company’s food handlers have been properly trained in the tasks assigned to them.

This course is specifically aimed at food businesses with an ‘HACCP Manual’ and/or certified in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 22000, BRC 7, IFS or FSSC 22000.
