Functions of the standards
The basic functions of standardisation are:
- To establish uniform specifications for raw materials, production machinery and finished products, as well as quality specifications for the provision of services.
- To develop reliable methods and means for assessing quality in production.
- To define quality requirements through procedures and methods aimed at continuous improvement.
- To develop a systematic approach based on terminology, standardised values, and efficient and stable documentation, coding and information systems for all processes.
- To implement terminology and standardised values in the scientific and technological fields.

Quality Management
Las principales normas de gestión de la calidad certificables son:
- ISO 9001. Es la norma más habitual.
- IATF 16949, sobretodo vinculada con el sector de la automoción.
- ISO 13485, vinculado con los productos sanitarios o medical device
- ISO 13009 para la gestión de la calidad en playas.
Otras normas son la ISO 39001 de seguridad vial, la UNE 179002 de transporte sanitario, Q de Calidad Turística, CEPA referente a control de plagas o marcado CE para certificaciones de producto.
Environmental management
Destacamos las siguientes normas vinculadas con la gestión ambiental y la sostenibilidad:
- ISO 14001, la más habitual y conocida.
- EMAS, verificación del sistema de gestión ambiental.
- ISO 50001 sobre eficiencia energética.
- Protocolo GHG e ISO 14064 referente a Informe de GEI.
- Etiqueta ecológica (ISO 14020) y Declaración Ambiental de Producto (ISO 14025)
- ISO 14044 sobre el análisis del ciclo de vida ACV.

Health and Safety at Work
Se dispone la norma ISO 45001 de Seguridad y Salud Laboral. Además, varias normas y auditorías de Responsabilidad Social tratan sobre la seguridad y salud laboral como Ecovadis, SMETA, B-Corp o Memoria GRI.

Las normas más destacadas vinculadas con la seguridad en el comercio internacional son:
- OEA referente a la cadena de suministro.
